Configuration ManagementConfiguration Management is the discipline of managing the assets of a project to ensure that they are specified, tracked and controlled. A configuration management system should be able to handle version control and change control of individual products, the baselining of groups of products, product identification schemes and the audit trail of products from concept to implementation. Without a configuration management system, any non-trivial project will quickly slide into chaos! In Prince2, configuration management is described as five basic functions of - Planning of the configuration management processes and procedures for the project - Setting up of an identification scheme - Control of products through mechanisms to protect against unauthorised change, and to track authorised change - Status accounting of the audit trail of each product - Verification of products and baselines to ensure that the configuration management system accurately reflects the true situation. The means by which this is achieved on a Prince2 project should be defined in a Configuration management Plan, part of the project Quality Plan |
